About the Webinar

Coercive control isn’t limited to domestic partnerships — it’s increasingly being recognised as a serious risk to the autonomy and wellbeing of older Australians. In response, several jurisdictions have introduced or progressed laws to criminalise coercive control and establish adult safeguarding frameworks aimed at protecting older persons, especially in the context of financial abuse. This practical session examines what succession lawyers need to know now. It covers:

  • An up-to-date overview of coercive control legislation and reform across Australian states and territories, including key commencement dates
  • The challenges of applying these laws to elder abuse scenarios, particularly where the abuse is subtle or ongoing
  • The adult safeguarding laws in NSW, South Australia and the ACT — how they work and what remedies they offer
  • Additional legal tools and strategies available to protect elderly clients from undue influence and financial manipulation, including the role of practitioners in recognising and responding to signs of abuse.
