About the Webinar

The saying “there is a time and place for everything” could easily be applied to SMSFs. This session takes more of a philosophical approach, rather than a nuts and bolts approach, as to when it may be time to draw stumps on an SMSF, including:

  • A review of client/member situations that may suggest an SMSF is no longer an ideal structure for them
  • What to consider when a cost/benefit analysis is being undertaken to determine whether to retain an SMSF
  • What guidance does the trust deed provide on winding up an SMSF?
  • Points to consider when addressing whether the SMSF should be an ongoing part of a member's estate plan
  • Is planning of SMSF control in the event of lost capacity or death overshadowing the discussion on whether the SMSF should in fact continue?
  • Could the prolonged lives of SMSFs in some instances be contributing to the increase in super disputes?
  • A review of AFCA determinations involving advice provided on whether an SMSF should continue or be wound up (incl. AFCA determination no. 12-00-718737 24 December 2024)
  • The pros and cons of complexity versus simplicity when considering if an SMSF has reached its use by date
  • Practical case study
